by Dr. Syed Haider Hussain Shamsi

THE LIFE AND THE TIMES OF THE IMAM (a)

Imam Ja'far As-Saadlq was bom in 83 AH during the reign of the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik bin Marwan.  He was only three years of age when Walid bin Abd al-Malik succeeded to the caliphate after his father.  The Imam had the good fortune of spending the first twelve years of his life with his grandfather, Imam Ali Zain al-Abideen.  He then spent the next eighteen years of his life with his father, Imam Muhammad Baqir.  He was thirty-one years of age when his father was also martyred with poison by Hisham bin Abd al-Malik in II 4 AH.  Thus, the hnwn had seen the reign of five Umayyad caliphs before he was appointed Imam by his father before his death.  The relatively long rule of Hisham lasted for about twenty years.  He was a contemporary of the Imam for twelve of these years.   More.....

Why do the Innocent Suffer?

Understanding the Difference Between the Apparent and the Reality

An individual once asked Sayyid Mawdudi about why many people, despite being good and pious, or apparently innocent, suffer severe tribulations in this worldly life. What wrong could a minor child or an infant, for example, commit so that he or she should have to suffer a fatal disease or even be murdered? Why do we see many good people suffering severe afflictions and calamities that they apparently do not deserve?    More.....

Transformation, not Assimilation !
(an excerpt from one of Dr. Robert Crane's heart-warming emails)

" ......There is no escape from oppression and death in any physical sense, so that hijra (to move from one place to another) in a material sense will not solve any problems and would merely change the venue or location of our vulnerability to oppression.  Assimilation clearly can never be an option for any person on a religious path because it would mean spiritual suicide, which is an unforgivable sin.  The only response to overwhelming evil, therefore, whether it comes from terrorists or counter-terrorists or counter-counter-terrorists, is to transform ourselves as the only means to transform the world.  Certainly we can and should work to transform the unjust institutions of the world, as well as to lesson the injustices that result from them, but these efforts can never succeed in any meaningful way except through the cumulative efforts of individual persons to change themselves, so that the power of God can work through them in ways that we may not even be able to understand.
