An Introduction to the Dar al-Hadith New Structure

Dar al-Hadith Scientific-Cultural Institute

Hadith, after the Holy Quran, and as a second religious source of Islam, has a large share in the introduction of Islam and the formation and development of Islamic Sciences.

The Dar al-Hadith Scientific-Cultural Institute is the first independent Institute that is specialized in the sciences and researches of Hadith in the Shi’ah World. This Institute began its activities officially in the holy city of Qom on 20\6\1416 AH –correspondent to the anniversary of the blessed birth of Lady Fatima al-Zahra’ (a.s.), by the decree of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran and with the efforts of its founder and director Ayatollah Muhammad Muhammadi Reyshahri for the propagating of the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) and the Infallible Imams (a.s.).

The Institute promotes its mission through three approaches: educational, research, and publicity.

Educational approach by the Quran and Hadith University;

Research approach by the Quran and Hadith Research Centers;

Publicity approach by the Cultural and International Communications Department;

Other sub-departments of the Institute include International Centre for Islamic Manuscripts, Specialized Hadith Library, Secretariat of Conferences, Publishing Organization, and other parts of the institute.

The Research Center Sub-Departments

The Department of Encyclopedias

The Department of Encyclopedias is one of the first active departments of this institute. It was established in order to facilitate the applicable researches and to pave the way for easy access to the encyclopedias and the great hadith collections. It is notable that Mawsu’at Ma`rif al-Kitab wa al-Sunnah (Encyclopedia of the Quran and Hadith), is the biggest project conducted by the Department of Encyclopedia so far. Up to now two letters (A and B) have been published in ten volumes, possessing 49 entries along with explanations and topical analysis in Arabic and Persian. Among the most important publications of this department are the following: Mizan al-Hikmah (the Scale of Wisdom), Muntakhab Mizan al-Hikmah (Selections from the Scale of Wisdom), and Mawsu’at a-Imam Ali (a.s.) and Mawsu’at a-Imam Hussayn (a.s.).

The Department of Reviving and Editing

Among the tasks of this department is to revive and publish the works that have never yet been published, and doing so in a scientific and artful way.

Scholars find it obligatory on them to be very certain before dealing with any tradition as to whether the tradition has been said (or practiced) by the infallibles. One of the most important ways to know the source of traditions is the Science of Narrators (‘ilm al-rijal). The Shi’ah and Sunni scholars have written many books on the recognition of the narrators of hadith. One of the important duties of the Department of Hadith Narrators in the Dar al-Hadith Institute is to know the process and methods of the authors of such books and their ways in evaluating the narrators of traditions and to extract the criterions relied on in this process.

The Department of History of Hadith

The task of this department is to study the available schools of the scholars of hadith, knowing the methods of narrators and scholars of hadith through their books, and studying the extent of the influence of the environment on the writing of traditions, books of Hadith...etc.

The Research Center for Hadith Sciences and Teachings publishes two periodical journals:
